International Women's day at the Museum

We celebrate the International Women's day 8th of March with mini lectures, poetry reading and song from Tundradundrene!

 We celebrate at the museum—and you are more than welcome to join! 

We open the doors at 5pm and warms up with chatting, snacks and book sales. The program begins at 5.30 in Lassegrotta, and finishes at 7pm. 

The program includes four mini lectures: 
Lena C. Endresen: "Facts about women in Svalbard and the International Women’s Day" 
Paula Sankelo: "Female Pioners in Svalbard"  (held in English)
Maria Jensen: "Women in Arctic research and field work" (held in English) 
Kanerva Karpo: "Guiding and motherhood in Svalbard" (held in English) 

Between the mini lectures there will be song from Tundradundrene, and there will even be opportunity for singing together. 

NB! Parts of the program is in Norwegian, and parts in English. 


  • Fra den første internasjonale kvinnedagen, 8. mars 1975. 5 kvinner demonstrerte med tog på Stormessa. Tidspunktet gjorde at få var til stede, noen klappet. Senere gikk de videre til forsamlingshuset og publikumet som hadde sett "Isvisas" revy. "Demonstrantene" var skuffet over oppmøtet blant byens øvrige kvinnelige befolkning.
