Low-stope mining in Mine 3. Rune Stiauren and Dagrun Bakketun. Photo: Svein Haaland, Svalbardposten
With the closure of Mine 7, more than one hundred years of Norwegian coal mining in Svalbard has come to an end. Mining has been fundamental to Norwegian settlement and presence in the archipelago. This exhibition tells the story of mining in Longyearbyen and Sveagruva, about the daily working life of the miners, and about the importance of mining for the local community.
The exhibition is produced by the Svalbard Museum.
