Exhibition on Bear Island

On Friday, September 20, 2019, a historical exhibition opened in the old meteorological station on Bear Island. The project was led by Herdis Lien from the Svalbard museum and Jon Kolsum from the Norwegian Meteorological Service in Northern Norway.

The idea of establishing an exhibition in the old meteorological station had existed for a long time, and as early as in the 1970s, the crews on Bear Island began collecting artifacts. The building has been carefully restored to reflect its appearance in the early 1960s.

The exhibition covers the history from Willem Barentsz’s discovery in 1596 up to the present day.

LPO Architects and glazier André Jenssen contributed to the physical design of the exhibition, which was supported by the Governor of Svalbard and the Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund.
