The Norwegian Polar Institute

The Norwegian Polar Institute is Norway’s central state institution for management-relevant research, environmental monitoring, and mapping in the Arctic and Antarctica. It is a directorate under the Ministry of Climate and Environment, and is Norway’s expert strategic advisor concerning environmental protection in polar regions. It has administrative authority in the Norwegian Sector of Antarctica.

Its research is focused on polar climate, environmental pollutants, biological diversity, and geology. The research is done mainly in Svalbard and adjacent seas (including the Barents Sea), and in Dronning Maud Land in Antarctica.
